Trinity is a church shaped by our active God who creates this unique gathering of people by the power of the person and work of Jesus Christ. We want to see the fresh power of God's grace intersect in our daily lives with the goal that others become our priority and the kingdom of Jesus Christ grows by faith working through love.
Who We Are
Trinity is a church shaped by our active God who creates this unique gathering of people by the power of the person and work of Jesus Christ. We want to see the fresh power of God's grace intersect in our daily lives with the goal that others become our priority and the kingdom of Jesus Christ grows by faith working through love. We are then...
A Gathering Of All People. We are part of the great work of God through all time. In Revelation 7:9 we see God creating His people from every nation, tribe, people and language. Each time we gather in worship we experience a taste of the infinite joy that will mark the future when Christ makes all things new. Whenever we gather we are a picture of what the future will reveal: that people from all nations will praise God for the mercy and grace found in His Son.
A Gathering Around the Gospel. In the Gospel we rely not on our efforts or moral conformity to codes or rules but upon what God has done on our behalf. What is called the Gospel is the announcement that God, in human flesh, did everything in order to have us become His sons and daughters. This Gospel, coming as an announcement and not moral instructions, is described in the Scriptures as the "power of God for salvation to everyone who believes." (Romans 1:16). The Gospel is news of a merciful King who includes us in His forever kingdom. We desire that God's grace would intersect in our daily lives to the end that the orientation of our hearts would move outward toward others. We purposely seek the fresh power of God's grace as a way of living.
A Gathering For Life Change. We believe that a process of change is underway in the hearts of everyone who relies upon Jesus Christ. Change is at the core of the Gospel or the good news. This change has to do with the basic orientation of our hearts -- a shift needed from Self to Others. For this change to take place we continue to look to Jesus who alone can do this work in us. We are Christ-centered because of our continual need for Christ.
Our Story
Christians and the Gospel. Unleashing the wondrous and deeply satisfying news of Jesus was the original vision of those who founded Trinity in 1977. Because of the gospel, Trinity Presbyterian Church is making a difference in the community. The truth is Christians need the Gospel. That is our chief goal.
Origins. Trinity originally started at Aikahi Elementary School and within a few years purchased the land on Auloa Road. In 1982 the vision of the Church expanded to include Trinity Christian School .
The Story of Renewed Hope. Trinity's story is one of renewed hearts. The power of the cross creates renewal of love and desire in the hearts of worshippers. The Gospel's power brings hope that we can live and move in love and have confidence that God is working. God empowers us by His Gospel. Every area of life is to fall in line with the Gospel: we are to live in light of how God has acted toward us in sending His Son.
"I was ready to give up on the idea of Church," so said someone who grew up on Oahu. This individual went on to explain with tears in his eyes that at Trinity his family not only heard good teaching but that he saw a heartfelt desire to put into practice the things that were spoken.
"Thank you for being here, my wife was ready to give up all together" said the husband whose wife had been trained as a Christian Counselor and who had become deeply frustrated with her church experience.
So today, to respond to Jesus Christ with joyful willingness, we gather in worship, receive instruction, live in community, and seek to bless and serve our community.
Our Vision
Our Vision. To see the fresh power of the God's grace intersect in our daily lives with the goal that others become our priority and the kingdom of Jesus Christ grows by faith working through love.
Our Mission. Our twofold mission is to gather the nations and grow in the Gospel. It is shaped by Matthew 28:18-20 and Ephesians 4:11. We live this out in four key areas: growth in grace, fellowship and service, biblical world and life view, and evangelism and missions.
Our Beliefs. Trinity is a church shaped by our active God who creates this unique gathering of people by the power of the person and work of Jesus Christ. All that Trinity Church embraces and teaches arises from Scripture. The Scriptures are God's complete revelation to us, and as such are our only rules for faith and practice. Our Statement of Faith may be a helpful first place to understand what Trinity believes the Bible teaches.
Trinity: A Historically Rooted Church. Trinity joins the worldwide church in embracing our historic creeds and confessions. Creeds and confessions have been used in history to unify God's church in heart and mind as well as to defend against heresy. From the period of early church history (AD 100-500) Christians have been given the Apostle's, Nicene, and Athanasian creeds. What is called the definition of Chalcedon (451) is embraced as well as it includes important truths about Christ and his human and divine nature. Specific to the Presbyterian Church is a confession from England called the Westminster Confession of Faith (1648). The Westminster Confession is a condensed summary of biblical doctrines that are arranged in chapters with Scripture citations. Those who are hungry for rich doctrine find the Westminster to be an enjoyable feast time and time again.
Trinity: A Reformed Church. A Reformed Church holds forth Jesus Christ alone for salvation through faith alone by grace alone. The Protestant Reformation of the 16th Century was a recovery of the Gospel. Protestant Churches hold that Jesus rules His church by His Word and Spirit. One key truth about a Reformed Church is that, from beginning to end, God receives glory for our salvation.
Trinity: A Presbyterian Church. Presbyterian also means the church is governed by elders elected by the people. We are affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America . Our national seminary is Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis MO. The PCA has a national college ministry called Reformed University Fellowship that is located on over 100 college campuses. Our sister churches on Oahu are Trinity Church Central Oahu and The City Church of Honolulu .
Our Worship
Two words that characterize Trinity's worship are love and renewal. We are instructed in Scripture that the heart is the place where our loves or affections are formed. Deuteronomy 6:5 tells us that it is with the whole heart, the whole soul, and with all our might we are to love God. How does this happen?
Love. Our great need is worship and to encounter Jesus Christ with our affections. God is to be our reference point for all of life. Through the Gospel and worship we become aware of our disordered loves. We move from self to God. The truth is a new love must be experienced and expel old affections. Trinity's worship seeks to demonstrate this new love by showing the riches that are in the Gospel of Christ. As we re-present the Gospel every Sunday we grow to love God, delight in God, and become deeply satisfied in God. We come as those who have fallen short of God's standards but in the Gospel we are given Christ's robe of righteousness through His obedience for us. This news arrives in the repentant heart as astonishing news. God covers our guilt and shame through Jesus and bids us to walk in newness of life because of love.
Renewal. The second characteristic of Trinity's worship is renewal of the heart. Jesus brought an experience of the heart to some men as He walked with them after His resurrection. This is recorded for us in Luke 24:24-25. By encountering Jesus in and through His instruction, they responded by saying, "...were not our hearts burning within us while He explained the Scriptures to us?" These men experienced what it is like to rightly love Jesus. It is done with the whole of one's being. It is like fire which cannot be controlled or contained. Our God, in the Gospel, is restoring our humanity. To be fully human means to be alive to God. We desire, then, as a Church to be a fellowship of the burning heart with Christ in our midst revealing Himself to us. Worship is a dialog between ourselves and God and through this dialog we hear God speaking to our hearts and we are compelled to respond. All the elements of our worship service reflect the this pursuit of rightly ordered love through renewal. God calls us to worship, we confess the truth about ourselves, and hear God's forgiveness. We hear God speak to us in His Word. We depart with God's blessing and seek to serve His kingdom through willing obedience. We seek this renewal, long for this, and struggle with inconsistent and sluggish hearts. Therefore, embrace struggle and welcome those who sense their many weaknesses. But we are hopeful for the future is bright. The chief goal of our worship is to love the Christ who presents Himself in His Word. The Gospel tells us that Christ is in our midst delighting in His people having removed our sins as far as the east is from the west.
Our worship pursuits of love and renewal are best captured by Jesus as He describes the understanding that grips those who see the kingdom's value. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field." (Matthew 13:44)
Worship As Means of Grace. All that is said above is to say that God has provided what is called a means of grace to sustain us and strengthen us. God has given to the Church a way for us to be genuinely changed by His grace. God comes to us in Word, the Sacraments of baptism and Lord's Supper and through prayer. Through these Christ communicates to His Church the benefits of His work for us and He makes these means effectual to us for salvation.
Our Leadership

We follow our God in service: Our mission at Trinity is to gather the nations and grow in the Gospel. But that begs the question, How do we accomplish this? The Bible's answer to this question is service . In fact, the Biblical word for service is the root of the word ministry. Because God, in the Gospel, first served us we respond to God and each other with heartfelt service.
Six Scriptural truths for ministry: How do we know where or how to serve? We find our purpose and our means of service from something greater than ourselves; only the Lord has the wisdom and power to truly change lives. With our reliance on God and His Word, Trinity Church has identified six Biblical truths that we believe should inform and guide everything we do.
Our Content
God's Word and the Gospel it contains should be the basic motivation and content of our ministry. ( Rm. 1:16-17 ; 2 Tim. 3:14-17 ; Isaiah 55:10-11 )
Our Confidence
God is at work in us, through us, and around us even when it doesn't seem like it. ( John 5:17 ; Eph. 2:10 ; 1 Cor. 3:5-9 )
Our Community
Relationships are the primary context in which God works. ( 1 Peter 4:8-11 ; 1 Cor. 12:12-31 ;
Heb. 10:24-25 )
Our Body
God loves the Church in all her brokenness and is building her up to be the bride of Christ. ( Eph. 1:22-23 ; Eph. 3:10-11 ; Eph. 5:25-27 )
Our Discipleship
People have changes and needs specific to their life stages, and God uniquely ministers to each of us so we can grow in our faith. ( Luke 2:40 , 52 ; 1 Tim. 5:1-4 ; Compare Paul's speech to different groups of people in Acts 13:13-52 and Acts 17:22-34 )
Our Culture
God is the author and redeemer of every culture. We are blessed to live in Hawaii and we are here for its good. ( Jer. 29:7 ; John 3:16 ; Rev. 7:9-10 )
Why Fellowship Groups?
In this modern, individualized age, how convenient it is to believe that we can grow as Christians all alone with God and the Bible! Private devotions are an important part of growing in faith but the Bible also reveals to us that relationships are important and essential in living the Christian life. For example, in Paul's letter to the Thessalonians, we are encouraged to love one another, encourage and build one another up. So we gather as "Fellowship Groups" to grow as a community of believers as how God designed us to, in the knowledge and practice of the Gospel.
What does a Fellowship Group look like?
Fellowship Groups are groups of 8-15 people who gather regularly together outside of church to grow in the Gospel together and reach out to our community. Each Fellowship Group has a slightly different format reflecting the people and families in that group; however, all have a combination of both study and discussion, as well as plenty of time to just hang out, eat food, and enjoy sharing life together.
To facilitate study and discussion, some groups have used a DVD teaching series such as Tim Keller's Prodigal God video and workbook, or Paul Tripp's How People Change. Other groups use the time to reflect and discuss recent sermons, the Bible, or Christian literature. Many groups regularly gather to share a meal together or have a game night, and some others have also allotted time for each individual or family to share their testimonies.

Men's & Women's Studies
Trinity Church has men's and women's Bible studies that meet weekly to discuss various books, topics, Bible passages, and enjoy fellowship with one another. These groups help foster and enable more in-depth community and offer a chance to dig deeply into God's word together.
Connecting Events
Outside of formal study, the men and women of Trinity Church often get together to hike, cook-out, bike-ride, and enjoy time together. The women have a monthly time called Killah Kau Kau to cook together and share recipes.
Service in the Body
One of our goals at Trinity is to have the Gospel enter into our daily lives. We believe that there are few better ways for this to happen than to serve one another. Volunteers in the church organize many of these service activities, which include baby showers, wedding showers, meals for families with new children, and special care for military families with deployed spouses.
Seminars
Marriage & Family. Each January Trinity Church hosts a marriage conference open to everyone. Marriage is perhaps the most powerful, most transformative and most difficult relationship God has given us and it seems well worth it to us as a Church to be intentional about continually growing and being challenged in our marriages.
Paul Tripp , a well-known counselor and author on marriage and family life from the Christian Counseling Education Foundation, will be speaking at our conference January 20-21, 2012.
Dr. Dan Zink , the professor of marriage and family counseling at Covenant Theological Seminary will be speaking in January of 2013.
Pastor Scotty Smith , author speaker and senior pastor of Christ Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee will be speaking in January of 2014.
Parenting
The pastoral staff provide instruction three times each year on parenting the hearts of children and youth. These are helpful introductory seminars based upon Tedd Tripp's Shepherding A Child Heart and Paul Tripp's Age of Opportunity .
Mens Study
Vision: Men of Trinity Mens Ministry aims to encourage men to know Christ; walk with Christ, and to serve Christ.
Mission: The Ministry will do this by growing authentic relationships with like-minded Christian men who will: grow in their faith and understanding through teaching and instruction; grow as leaders in the household and church; and encourage one another to model the gospel in daily life.
Men of Trinity will host a series of small group discussions on the topic of, "Is Romance Overrated?" A Discussion on Marriage for Christian Men. Study will be held on the February 1st, February 29th, March 14th and March 28th. Study will meet at Todd Capen's House. On February 15th, the men will gather for a BBQ and fellowship in place of the small group meeting.
Women's Study
January 24th will begin our new study! We will be studying an overview of the Old Testament using a childrens bible as a guide and discussion starter. I am very excited about this. Hopefully you guys will be as well! The childrens bible is entitled The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones. This will be a 23-week study if all goes as planned and we will end on the 26th of June. The plan from there will be to see if we like the study enough to move on to the New Testament doing the same thing after a break.
Children's Ministry
Like all the ministries of Trinity Church, our children's ministry exists to gather children under the gracious umbrella of God's kingdom and help them grow in the power and guidance of the Gospel, the good news of God's grace in Christ Jesus. We delight in the hope of redemption that children are and seek to incorporate them in worship as full members of the body of Christ.
Sunday Morning Worship. Children of all ages are always welcome in our Sunday morning worship service. We especially encourage participation in singing and responsive readings as well as the children's message.
Nursery. We provide a nursery during the worship service that is divided into two rooms. Promise Land I is for children up to one and a half (non-walkers) and Promise Land II is for children up to three years (walkers). The children are cared for by a weekly rotation of church members and a trained "Mother of the Month" who supervises the nursery each Sunday to ensure safe and consistent care.
Children's Instruction. During the sermon and corporate time of prayer, we provide a separate time of instruction called Children's Instruction 1 for children ages 4-6 and Children's Instruction 2 for ages 7-9. At Discoveryland we help children discover the Gospel message and prepare for worship in the greater Church body. We do this through Bible story presentations, prayer, activities, training in catechism, and through an offering.
Youth. Christian growth takes on new facets at each life stage. Teenagers often begin asking questions in new and deeper ways. We believe that parents are the primary source of influence for their children. But the Church has a responsibility to be interacting with and answering those questions. Trinity Church provides a youth group meeting each Wednesday night from 7-9pm at our church building. The youth group gathers teens from Trinity Church, Trinity Christian School, and our community.
Praising His Name Hula Halau. A hālau is Hawaiian word meaning a school, academy, or group. Literally, the word means "a branch from which many leaves grow." It is now a word associated with a hula dance group. This ministry trains young girls, ages five to ten years, to concentrate on God by using their bodies to praise Him. Psalm 149:3 says, " Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp." The movements learned are designed to joyfully express the Gospel. Performances are part of church gatherings.
Youth Group at Trinity
Just like our vision for the whole church is to see the fresh power of the God’s grace intersect in our daily lives with the goal that others become our priority and the kingdom of Jesus Christ grows by faith working through love, so is that the vision of Youth Group. We will also incorporate our twofold mission, which is to gather the nations and grow in the Gospel. It is shaped by Matthew 28:18-20 and Ephesians 4:11. So gathering the teens together for a weekly meeting, from the church, school, and other friends, accomplishes the first goal. And we seek to accomplish the second goal as we endeavor to sharpen one another with love through a growing understanding of God’s grace, by investing in one another’s lives in fellowship and in service, by developing a greater understanding of a biblical world and life view, and also bringing others into this process through evangelism and missions.

We are committed to building intentional and genuine friendships both within and outside the church. We want the Gospel to permeate all aspects of our everyday lives including our community, as we believe it profoundly transforms and impacts all aspects of it. Thus, when we refer to "gathering the nations" we believe that it begins with the relationships that are already near us. In this sense everything that we do, from Sunday morning worship to an afternoon hiking trip is in part our efforts to engage and reach out to our community.
Community Service
Trinity Church is involved in a number of organized service projects to minister to the needs of individuals in our community.
One highlight of the Christmas season every year is when the church puts together baskets full of ingredients and supplies for a Christmas dinner, and delivers them to families in a transitional housing complex in Waimanalo called Weinberg Village. After delivering dozens of dinner baskets, we join with the resident families to sing a few Christmas carols and share cookies outside.
Some of our other community service efforts include:
- Prison ministry at the Women's Community Correctional Center in Kailua, through a program called
Total Life Recovery
- Individual tutoring relationships with students in Waimanalo, Hawaii
- Trinity Christian School scholarship program
Missions
Our approach to missions follows the pattern of local, national, and international. At each of these levels we desire to be strategic in our giving to missions. We support missions through prayer and finances, and we are in the planning stage of short term trips in order to support our friends doing kingdom expansion. One example of our missions giving is the support provided River of Life Mission here on Oahu. River of Life provides thousands of meals to needy people each month and provides the hope of the Gospel through caring staff. A ministry supported by Trinity at the national level is the Christian Counseling and Education Foundation which endeavors to restore biblical counseling to the Church. At the international level our support is strategic in that we focus on Church planting around the world. For instance, Trinity partners with Redeemer Presbyterian in New York City by contributing to their City to City church planting ministry. This ministry targets the major cities around the world and seeks to establish strong churches in these strategic places of influence. Trinity supports other strategic efforts for the Gospel around the world. Our greatest joy is the personal connection we have with four missionaries whom we support in Southeast Asia. For security reasons, we do not include their names here, but those who participate in the life of Trinity will become aware of who they are and how to pray for them.
Founded in 1981, just a few years after Trinity Church, Trinity Christian School is an outgrowth of our desire at Trinity Church to meet the practical needs of our community. Starting in Pre-Kindergarten and graduating its first class in 2013, TCS offers a unique Christ centered classical education.
One of the unique attributes of TCS is the diversity of its population. While serving the Trinity Church congregation through the opportunity for Christian education, the Trinity student body gathers students from scores of churches and the surrounding community.
The Church's vision and commitment to Christian education has provided quality Classical Christian education to its congregation, while reaching out to the community in an effort to expand the vision of Christian education.
If you are interested in learning more about Trinity Christian School please visit the school's website , or feel free to call the school office at 808-262-8501. We look forward to the opportunity to serve you with this ministry of our church.
As we read the stories in the Bible and then begin to engage in service we realize that we are participating in a story, taking up our own place in the plot. That's because Christianity isn't just a story about what happened in the past, it's a story about what God is continuing to do now. Ephesians 4:11-13
If you're new to Trinity, we hope that as you grow into our church community you'll be drawn into participating and serving in what God is doing here.

What To Expect On Sunday Morning
Trinity is the first church in Hawaii with the Presbyterian Church in America. We are a relatively young congregation. Lots of kids! Our Sunday attendance is about 125 people with many more calling Trinity their home church. We are a church committed to reaching Kailua and Windward Oahu.
Our worship starts at 10 am At 9:30 am, fresh coffee is served and people are engaged in conversations. Just prior to 10:00am the parking lot is full of activity as people make their way into the sanctuary. You'll see smiles and experience our greeting: we are genuinely glad you found us and hope your first worship service with us is a blessing to you.
Brief Overview of Worship Scripture presents worship as a dialog and it starts with a call to worship. This is followed by songs, prayers of adoration, confession, hearing the forgiveness of sins, and prayer for people in the Church. We hear the Word of God through reading it and hearing it delivered in a sermon. We celebrate the Lord's Supper or Communion once a month. We receive our tithes and offerings. Finally, we are sent out with the gracious embrace of our God to engage the world.
Sermons Preaching at Trinity is expositional and Gospel-driven. Expositional means that the text is examined and explained in its original context with the goal of application to our lives today. Applying the Bible to our lives is done through the grace of the Cross. The heart is called upon to look again and again to Christ. No lasting change will come about apart from the heart. Biblical preaching is not presenting mere facts about the Bible. Responding to the preached Word must be rooted in the good news and resources God has provided. We seek to preach Christ and unfold how the text speaks to our need for God's grace in Christ. We are Gospel-driven in the sense that in every aspect of our lives we seek to be aligned with how God has treated us in the Gospel.
Post Sermon A typical worship service is finished by 11:30am. We provide coffee and light refreshments in the foyer. Parents pick up their children from the Nursery. This is a great time to visit and meet new people.
How Should I Dress We hope you'll come and not feel self-conscious. You'll see people somewhat dressed up for Sunday morning and you'll also see people dressed casually. Our concern is that you feel you can enter into God's presence with a focus upon worship.
Nursery Loving volunteers are ready to receive your child at 9:45am. The Nursery is divided into two rooms. Promise Land I is for children up to one and a half (non-walkers) and Promise Land II is for children up to three years (walkers).
Worship and Children Children up to age 3 can be part of the Nursery ministry. Children up to age 7 remain in the worship service through the Children's Message and are dismissed to an age-appropriate instruction time of Children's Instruction 1 & 2. However, children of all ages are always welcome in our Sunday morning worship service. We especially encourage participation in singing and responsive readings as well as the children's message.
Sermons and Worship Folders
How does Sunday Morning connect with our day-to-day life? It is our hope at Trinity that the rhythm of Sunday Morning Worship sets the rhythm of the rest of our week. The conversation we have with God on Sunday morning attunes us to his rhythms and flows out into our lives. Like waves that keep rolling by, weekly worship keeps reminding us who He is and who we are, shaping everything else we do. Everything leads up to Sunday and flows out from it.
In an effort to help Sunday worship flow into the rest of the week, here are recordings of past sermons and PDF versions of the Worship Folders for you to use at any time. You can also find the sermons as a "podcast" on iTunes.
